Aseptic Other Dairy Fills A Third Of The World's Packs On 27,177 Million Litres: Family Cartons Grow 6% A Year While Portion Cartons Stall

Aseptic other dairy filled 27,177 million litres and 115,532 million packs in 2025, a third of the world total. Family cartons grew 6.0% a year while portion cartons went backwards.

Aseptic Other Dairy Fills A Third Of The World's Packs On 27,177 Million Litres: Family Cartons Grow 6% A Year While Portion Cartons Stall

Most of the coverage reads single-serve as the format that owns Asian dairy drinks. My read is the other way round. Aseptic other dairy filled 27,177 million litres in 2025. The portion carton inside it has not grown since 2020.

A fifth of the litres and a third of the packs

Zenith's Global Aseptic Packaging Market Report 2026 splits world aseptic filling four ways. White milk, other dairy, beverages and food. Other dairy took 27,177 million litres in 2025. That is 18.3% of the world total of 148,353 million litres.

The pack count tells a different story. Other dairy filled 115,532 million packs, a third of the world's 344,157 million. White milk filled 99,484 million packs on almost twice the litres.

Pack size is the reason. The category covers flavoured milk, drinking yoghurt, plant drinks, cream and creamers. Most of it goes out in small packs.

That matters for anyone selling cartons or fillers. A third of the world's aseptic packs are made here. Less than a fifth of the litres are.

The portion carton has stopped growing

Portion cartons lead the category at 14,977 million litres in 2025. They held 15,272 million litres in 2020. The portion carton has lost volume at 0.4% a year since then.

Pack numbers say the same. Portion cartons filled 73,017 million units in 2020. They filled 71,906 million in 2025.

Zenith forecasts a mild recovery, to 15,675 million litres and 75,968 million packs by 2030. That is growth of 0.9% a year on litres.

So the biggest format here is close to flat. It still holds 55% of the litres. The growth sits in other packs.

The family carton is the one growing

Family cartons of half a litre and over reached 7,586 million litres in 2025. They stood at 5,676 million litres in 2020. That is growth of 6.0% a year, the fastest of any pack in the category.

Zenith puts family cartons at 9,105 million litres by 2030. Growth slows to 3.7% a year. Pack numbers rise from 8,294 million to 9,940 million.

Small PET is the other riser. It reached 1,904 million litres in 2025 across 6,161 million bottles. Growth runs at 3.9% a year on creamers and protein drinks.

Bag in box is small and quick. It grew 5.5% a year to 553 million litres. Cream and dairy bases for food service sit behind that.

China is the only region going backwards

China still fills more aseptic other dairy than anyone, at 8,519 million litres. It filled 9,447 million litres in 2020. No other region lost volume over those five years.

Zenith forecasts a further slide to 8,244 million litres by 2030. The fall there runs at 0.7% a year.

East Europe grew fastest of all. It went from 500 million litres in 2020 to 749 million in 2025. That is a rate of 8.4% a year.

The Middle East and Africa grew 6.0% a year to 1,056 million litres. North America grew 5.3% a year to 2,121 million litres.

Where the litres sit now

South East Asia filled 5,468 million litres in 2025. It grew 3.7% a year and Zenith sees 6,674 million litres by 2030.

West Europe filled 4,822 million litres and grew 4.2% a year. That is a rare growth line in a region whose total aseptic volume is falling.

Latin America reached 2,895 million litres. Asia Pacific reached 1,547 million litres. Neither is large beside China or South East Asia.

The whole category grows 2.0% a year to 30,078 million litres by 2030. Only beverages grow faster across the four product blocks.

What this means for the market

A line bought for this category is bought for a pack size. A portion filler and a family filler are different machines. The split between them is moving.

Three things decide the case for a new line here. The first is whether the market drinks single-serve or take-home. The second is whether China's fall frees converting capacity for export. The third is whether the growth is new drinkers or bigger packs.

Shops and the home fridge pull in different directions. Single-serve follows kiosks, schools and convenience. The family carton follows the weekly shop.

An entrant should size the format rather than the category.

One format rarely turns a category by itself. What matters is whether the same switch shows up market by market. Our Global Aseptic Packaging Market Report 2026 splits 39 markets by pack type and size.

Strategic Insights

📊 Analytics & Strategic Insight

Other dairy is a pack business, and its biggest pack has stopped growing

The decision most in this industry are avoiding:

👉 A fifth of the litres can be a third of the packs. Other dairy runs on small packs. Carton and filler demand follow packs.

👉 The biggest format in a category can be the flattest one. Portion cartons hold 55% of the litres. They have lost share since 2020.

👉 China can fall while the category grows. Chinese litres dropped 928 million since 2020. The world added 2,314 million.

Here's the full context:

→ 2020: The category filled 24,863 million litres. Portion cartons held 15,272 million of them.

→ 2024: Litres reached 26,708 million. Family cartons had climbed to 7,282 million.

→ 2025: The category reached 27,177 million litres across 115,532 million packs.

→ 2025: China fell to 8,519 million litres, below its 2020 figure.

→ Most recent: Zenith forecasts 30,078 million litres by 2030. Family cartons take 9,105 million of that.

What this means for aseptic fillers, converters and equipment suppliers:

✅ Portion carton demand is a replacement market. Litres have slipped 0.4% a year since 2020. A new line there replaces an old one.

✅ Family carton work is where the new lines go. Litres grew 6.0% a year and packs 6.1%. Both keep growing to 2030.

✅ Small PET is taking creamers and protein drinks. It reached 1,904 million litres across 6,161 million bottles. Growth runs at 3.9% a year.

What this means for market decisions:

1️⃣ The category is attractive on packs rather than on litres. It holds 18.3% of world litres. It holds a third of world packs.

2️⃣ Carton makers with family formats gain, and China loses. Family cartons add 1,519 million litres by 2030. China sheds 275 million.

3️⃣ An entrant should test pack size before it tests the category. Single-serve and take-home are separate markets. They need separate lines.

The Zenith view:

These figures show that family cartons grew while portion cartons did not. They do not show that single-serve is finished, because it still holds 55% of the litres. What decides a new line is whether the market buys for the fridge or for the hand.
