Goodman Fielder Opens A NZ$100m UHT Plant In Christchurch: New Zealand's Liquid Milk Exports Are Flat At 255,000 Tonnes
Goodman Fielder has opened a NZ$100 million high-value dairy centre in Christchurch, built around long-life milk for China and South East Asia. New Zealand's liquid milk exports have sat flat near 255,000 tonnes, so the plant sells more protein in the litre rather than more litres.

I had this filed as one more dairy plant opening. Then I looked up what New Zealand ships as liquid milk. The country exports about 255,000 tonnes a year, and the line is flat.
Goodman Fielder opened its Meadow Fresh High Value Dairy Centre in Christchurch on 10 September. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon opened it. More than NZ$100 million has gone into the site in three years. The new part makes long-life milk for export.
What Goodman Fielder Built
The centre sits at Upper Riccarton in Christchurch. It adds ultra-filtration for high-protein dairy products. It adds a pilot plant for new recipes. It adds automated pallet racking for finished stock. The work created 25 jobs and took the site to 280 people.
Goodman Fielder runs two dairy sites in New Zealand. The other is Longburn at Palmerston North. More than 500 people work across the two. Together they handle more than 250 million litres of milk a year.
The Export Line Is Flat
Here is the number that moved me. The US farm service puts New Zealand liquid milk exports at 246,000 tonnes in 2024. It raised 2025 to 255,000 tonnes. It forecasts 2026 at 255,000 tonnes again. China takes three quarters of that trade.
New Zealand milks a lot and sends almost all of it abroad. Milk output for 2026 is put at 21.9 million tonnes. Liquid milk is a sliver of that. Most of the rest leaves as powder, butter, cheese and protein. So the liquid milk lane is small, and it has stopped growing.
More Protein In The Same Litre
Filtration raises the protein in a litre of milk. The pack stays the same size. The price per pack goes up. That is how a flat litre count can still add value. Goodman Fielder aims these products at China and South East Asia.
Where The Packs Land
The plant has a buyer lined up. Goodman Fielder signed a long-term supply deal with Yihai Kerry Arawana. That firm is part of Wilmar International. Wilmar also owns Goodman Fielder. The deal covers retail and foodservice, and it includes Sam's Club in China.
Meadow Fresh has made dairy in New Zealand for more than 60 years. It sells at home and across the Pacific and South East Asia. The Christchurch push is aimed at buyers who pay more for protein. Ambient milk reaches those shelves without a chiller.
What The Filling Side Gets
Long-life milk needs aseptic filling. Zenith's Global Aseptic Packaging Market Report 2026 puts world UHT white milk at 52.7 billion litres in 2025. That is 35.5% of the 148.4 billion litres packed aseptically. Cartons still carry 66.5% of world aseptic volume. White milk is the base under that share.
The report counts litres where they are filled. A litre filled in Christchurch counts in New Zealand. It then lands in China as an import. So a growing Chinese shelf can sit on filling lines that are somewhere else. China packed 17.9 billion litres of aseptic drinks in 2025. That figure grew 8.5% a year from 2020.
The Read For Suppliers
Treat this as a format story. Ask which pack sizes a high-protein line needs. Check whether the filler can run small packs and litre packs. Price the changeover hours, because short runs eat them. Watch the label and protein rules in the market you ship to.
One plant rarely shifts a world market on its own. What matters is whether the same move turns up in other countries. The pattern here is more protein in the same pack, sold further away. The Global Aseptic Packaging Market Report 2026 follows that market by market.

A flat export line is still a filling story
The decision most in this industry are avoiding:
👉 Litres and value have come apart. New Zealand ships about the same liquid milk each year. The money is moving inside the litre.
👉 A protein upgrade is a line change. New recipes need filling hours, new sizes and fresh checks. None of that shows in a volume forecast.
👉 The buyer sits inside the owner's group. Wilmar owns Goodman Fielder and Yihai Kerry Arawana. A group supply deal carries a different risk to an open tender.
Here's the full context:
→ Since 2021: Wilmar and Goodman Fielder put about NZ$300 million into New Zealand plants, technology and people.
→ 2024: New Zealand liquid milk exports run at 246,000 tonnes on US farm service figures.
→ 2025: The same source raises the year to 255,000 tonnes. China takes three quarters of it.
→ 2026: The forecast holds at 255,000 tonnes. National milk output is put at 21.9 million tonnes.
→ Most recent: Goodman Fielder opened its Christchurch centre on 10 September. The plant makes high-protein long-life milk for China and South East Asia.
What this means for aseptic fillers, converters and equipment suppliers:
✅ Sell filling hours rather than litres. A flat export lane still buys new formats, new sizes and more changeovers.
✅ Watch the small pack. High-protein milk sells in single serve as well as in litre packs. The pack mix decides the pack count.
✅ Follow the trade lane. On a production basis the filling sits in the exporting country. Demand data alone points you at the wrong plant.
3 moves you can make this week:
1️⃣ Split your forecast in two. Put litres in one column and value per litre in the other. Then see which one your plan rests on.
2️⃣ Cost one protein upgrade. Take a long-life line you run today. Price the filtration step, the new size and the lost hours.
3️⃣ Map one export lane. Pick a market you sell into and check how much of its ambient milk is filled abroad.
